How it works

This tool uses the WebCrypto API built into your browser — no external libraries. Text is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, a modern authenticated cipher that also detects any tampering. A fresh random 12-byte IV is generated for every encryption, so the same plaintext produces a different ciphertext each time. The output format [LOCKI:v2:…] matches what the Locki browser extension produces, so ciphertext created here can be decrypted by the extension and vice versa.

When to use this tool

  1. 01Quickly encrypt a password before sending it in Slack
  2. 02Verify that encrypted text decrypts correctly with your key
  3. 03Share sensitive information over email without risk

For teams

This tool is great for one-off encryption. If your team regularly shares sensitive data, Locki's browser extension lets you encrypt directly inside Slack, Gmail, and Jira — with centralized key management and audit logs.

Questions about this tool

Is it safe to encrypt text on this page?
Encryption and decryption run entirely in your browser with AES-256-GCM. Neither the text nor the key is sent to Locki or anyone else.
What do I need to decrypt the text later?
The same key. Without it the ciphertext cannot be decrypted, so keep the key somewhere safe and share it only with the people who should read the text.
What does the encrypted output look like?
A string that starts with [LOCKI:v2:. It contains a random IV and the ciphertext, so encrypting the same text twice gives two different results.
Can I decrypt this text in the Locki extension?
Yes. The tool uses the same format as the Locki extension, so text encrypted here opens in Locki with the same key, and the other way round.
